Tournament Sparring Seminars.
We had another really great points sparring section with everyone making good progress.
The Boxing ring I hired for the semi-contact kickboxing session was also extremely useful and everyone really seemed to gain a lot of confidence from some ring experience.
It’s a shame that there is no session in December (as it falls on the Dan Grading date).
Technical Course.
Sunday 7th Dec from 9.30am until 1pm. This is a course that is designed to ‘iron out’ any discrepancies that may have crept into our teaching since the last time we held such an event. We will go through the whole Taekwondo syllabus and ensure that everyone knows exactly what is what. ALL instructors need to attend and anyone who is intending to go for a Dan grade in the next 12 months.
There is no charge for MACT members but £10 for everyone else.
This is your chance to be present when all techniques are demonstrated, discussed and clarified. This is the best way to eliminate all doubt about the correct way to perform techniques. Please note that ONLY students who have attended a technical course within the previous 12 months will be allowed to take Dan Grades or to sit on grading panels. If you are approaching 2nd Dan or higher and you would like to be considered to sit on grading panels you MUST attend this course and pass the exam at the end.
NB It will be mainly watching NOT doing.
Mixed Martial Arts Classes
From Wednesday 28th January from 6-30 to 7-30pm we will be starting a Mixed Martial Arts beginners class. In it we will teach the basics of; kicking, punching, grabbing/grappling, throwing, pinning, joint locking etc.
The class will be approximately 50% body conditioning/fitness as this is vitally important in MMA. The other 50% will be spent on the technical aspects.
The primary reason for putting on this class is to attract NEW students to the Academy but we do accept that some existing Taekwondo and Kickboxing students may wish to take part. You will be welcome to try a couple of classes without charge but there will be a small additional cost to your monthly payment if you wish to participate regularly.
This does mean that the Wednesday Leadership class will begin at 7-30pm from 28th January.
If you know of anyone who may be interested in starting MMA ask them to get in touch with us please.
Christmas Party
Our next party is Sunday 14th December for kids and their families 5pm until 7-30pm to celebrate Christmas. Please contribute by adding your name to the ‘food’ list on the notice board at BC before the day.
The Power of Teamwork
Often, not always but often, a team can achieve something that an individual cannot. Sometimes an individual can achieve something as part of a team that they could not (or would not) have achieved alone.
I’m not sure how it works or why it works only that, sometimes, it works.
The best example I can think of is the Academy itself. The Academy achieves much more as a team than all of its team members could achieve on their own. This is often because each team member has different strengths (and lesser strengths) to other team members.
Here’s the idea;
What about if we ALL look around for training partners or even small training teams? It could be that a certain person inspires you or simply that you have a great time when your ‘partner’ is in the class with you. It could be that you are competitive with each other or that you encourage each other. It could be that your partner is close enough to tell you about your weaknesses and you will listen or it could be that your partner will tell you about your strengths and you will believe them.
In some cases it may be that you need support and they need to be supportive.
Don’t rush into this, have a think and, if someone asks you to be their training partner, be complimented . If you would like to ask someone to be your training partner, don’t be shy, just spit it out, shyness won’t get this show on the road.

Save Some Money
With all the talk of recession and credit crunch, you may be thinking of ways to save money? There is a great way to cut down on your grading fees.
We offer ‘Grading Vouchers’ these are pre payment vouchers that cover all of your gradings up to a certain grade. If you purchase a voucher for 5 Kyu gradings or more the cost will be just £15 per grading, (plus £80 to take the voucher to Junior Black Belt). A voucher to cover ALL kyu grades and chosho grades up to 1st Dan is just £275.
A voucher for ALL kyu and Chosho grades to 2nd Dan is £350 and ALL grades to 3rd Dan is £450.
Remember though that grading vouchers are not transferrable and not refundable.
Another great way to save money is by helping us with our cash flow. Anyone who runs a business understands that cash flow is usually the biggest challenge and we are no exception. If you would like to help us by pre paying your membership for 12, 24 or 36 months, we will offer you a discount of 15%, 20% or 25% respectively.
Our last class before the Xmas/New Year break is on Saturday 20th Dec. We start again on Monday 5th January.
Would YOU like to become a Kickboxing National Champion?
On Sunday 25th January 2009 we will be holding the first National Kickboxing Championships since 2002. Back by popular demand this event is the perfect way to decide who the best semi contact fighter is in the ‘National Association of Kickboxing’ for each weight division. With a maximum of 8 entries per weight category you need to get your entry in early. The winner will need to be successful in quarter, semi and final to take the title and trophy. There will also be trophies for second and third place competitors.
The entry fee is £15/person, spectators £5.
In the evening we intend to hold three 5 round full contact bouts for NAK full contact titles.
Remember someone in each weight category will go home with the title ‘National Champion’ it could be you.
This event is an ‘open’ event which means that martial artists from any style or association may compete.
Thinking Part.
This month I thought I would simply give you a quote from a well known author.
"The capacity for getting along with our neighbor depends to a large extent on the capacity for getting along with ourselves. The self-respecting individual will try to be as tolerant of his neighbor's shortcomings as he is of his own."
Eric Hoffer
Please remember I NEVER want to tell you what to think, just encourage you TO think.
